The latest installment in the Analogik series is here! This time I've veered from the orignal concept a bit in that I decided not to stick to the original only modulars formula. Percussion and some post processing is done on computer and an Elektron Machinedrum as well as a Korg Monotribe. Also, this time around I'm using my own modular which amongst other things, has a Tiptop Audio Z-DSP, Cylonix Cyclebox, The Harvestman Piston Honda and many other digital modules.

Reaktor 5: Morphing Effects as Sound Generators using Feedback Matrix
Here's something I've been playing around with recently: using effects in feedback matrices and morphing between presets. I got the idea when playing around with frequency shifted feedback in a Serge modular system. So I created a crude macro that let's you morph between the presets, but intend to improve upon it before releasing it (morphing speed modulation, snapshot lists etc). A lot of effects in Reaktor unfortunatly use non-interpolating parameters, like switches (which is good for saving cpu), thus creating clicks when morphing. I will be creating a set of effects intended for morphing like this which are completely designed for morphing (complete with polarizing mod matrices and such). In this particular setup, grainstates fx, a stereo frequency shifter with a wide range and crossfade between up and down-shift, a spacemaster reverb and an analogic filter box are being mixed using a matrix mixer. This allows for any output to be sent to any input. All of the effects are morphing randomly between presets and so is the matrix mixer. Works quite well as a proof of concept if you ask me!

DIY Flux Capacitor Expander

This demonstration uses my crude DIY flux capacitor for the Livewire AFG, basically 5 switches and 10 jacks corresponding to the flux cap pins. Two pin pairs are attenuated by two VCA's controlled by the makenoise/wiard wogglebug, crosspatched with the malekko/wiard noisering, which drives the melodic noodling, via a A-189-1 used as a bitcrusher, to perform cheap quantizing.
The sine output is sent to an input of a makenoise QMMG, driven by the A-143-1 envelope. About halfways through, a feedback path from the animated pulses, animated by A-143-1 LFOs, into the A-106-6 xpander filter (wogglebug controlled) goes into one of the pins on the flux cap expander, resulting in strange noises and unpredictable inharmonic distortion.

Next up is a quite complex patch, demonstrating some weird possibilities open up by having access to the individual pins of the AFG flux capacitor pins. All the AFG outputs are sent to the A-152 for switching, then into a f(h) plague bearer and after that routed into flux cap expander. At the same time, a pair of flux cap pins are sent into another f(h) plauge bearer. Everything is controlled by a Wogglebug/Noisering crosspatch quantized by a A-189-1 bitcrusher.
You're listening to the currently selected waveform from the A-152. This creates highly unpredictable noises, ringings and well... listen for yourself!

Iterations - Quadraphonic piece premieres friday 15/05/09
Sorry for the short notice, I've been REALLY busy, no time to update my blog.
On friday my quadraphonic piece iterations will be played to the public on the "LjudvÄgor" festival in Visby. It's a piece which I've been working for ever since I moved to here. What makes me proud of it is that I've managed to combine all my old techniques with new found ones and done things I've always wanted to try out, all in 6:42.
Just a small list of things I'm using: My modular (AFG, Z3000, A-106-1, A-106-6, A-132-3, A-143-1, A-189-1 and A-196), Reaktor (custom patches), Max/MSP (for algorithmic stuff), DtBlkFx, Ableton Live, Logic Studio (surround mixing, panning, quadraphonic reverbs etc)
I will try to find some proper medium to get it online somehow, for you to burn onto dvd-audio discs or whatever, in 5.1. Also it might be available in stereo on my upcoming release in june... =P

A-143-1 sequencing AFG in Antimatter Universe 2.4
I've been playing around with the antimatter jumpers on my AFG and came up with this with the jumpers set to 2 and 4.
It's being sequenced by two of the comparators of the A-143-1, going into the FM inputs.
The LFO's on the A-143-1 are modulating loads of parameters. AFG subsaw ringmodulated by AFG animated pulses go into the HP in of A-106-1 while pulse out goes into LP in. Animated saws FM A-106-1 frequency. Makes you long for the flux capacitor expansion... I might make one myself...

Doepfer A-106-1 Xtreme filter AR-FM Demo
I just bought a A-106-1 Xtreme Filter, I got it in the mail today!
Audio rate FM using four ADSR's in loop mode, the ADSR's are running in audio-rate.
ADSR1 is doing the syncronization.
ADSR2 is synched to ADSR2 and connected to a real ring mod, X input.
ADSR3 is not synched and goes into real ring mod, Y input.
ADSR4 is synched to ADSR1 and goes to CV3 (adjustable +/-10) on the A-106-1
real ring mod out is going into LP in on the A-106-1 VCF.
Resonance is up quite high, some kind of clipping is always active, either +, - or both.

Analogue vs Digital
So, for fun I wanted to do something with my currently extremely limited modular: I patched 2 ADSR's from my A-143-2 into self-trigger mode, with their speeds set to high. This creates two oscillators with a waveform which goes from saw-wave, to triangle and into ramp. Then I ran them into my passive ring-mod. The output was recorded while I tweaked away at it.Then I decided to go crazy, I put the soundfile into a track in Ableton Live and set the sample's playback setting to complex, I recorded tempo-changes to create fft'y time-stretches where needed. Next up was dtblk, binding settings to a midi-controller, made automating it a really good time. The end result was bounced to a new file, as I wanted a fresh start.
Next up was loads of filtering, using PSP Nitro, Oligaric, Arcdev Cyclotron and much more. This was done in parallell, in order to create more movement in the sound.

If you're wondering how I get it to integrate well with the modular sound, then I can give you some pointers.
1. Always work in 96 Khz and 24 or more bits, to avoid aliasing at all times, especially when working with recorded modular material! Then when all processing is finished, you can use some nice resampler, like the one by izotope which is available inside Audiofile Engineering's Wave Editor, for mac users, Adobe Audition's resampler isn't too bad either. Doing it this way will create a highly vivid result.

4. Automate, I really can't stress this enough, without movement, even if it's hard to hear it, effects and such which are static is what a lot of people associate with a digital sound.
5. Use your DAW and plugins to do things which aren't possible in the analogue world (why try to make your computer something it's not?), ideally, use a modular software, such as Plogue Bidule as a modular effect to control these plugins. Plogue Bidule can be utilized with multiple inputs and outputs to create extremely complex routings.
6. NEVER, and I mean NEVER, synthesize a waveform on a computer unless it's meant to have digital characteristics, a highly trained ear simply tells it from an analogue one instantly, unless it's a painstakingly accurate emulation, like d16-group's phoscyon, but it is the only example of an analogue emulation that has actually tricked one of my friends ;-)

TipTop Audio's Z3000 pics and Audio Demos

"First is a comparason between Blacet VCO sine and Z3000 sine. I just pan back and forth between them with a joystick. It starts with 2 bars of Blacet sine, then 2 bars of Z3000 sine, then back to Blacet, etc.
It ends with 4 bars of Blacet VCO."

"The second is just a very rough demo of applying FM to the Z3000. I'm not modulating the FM index through a VCA or anything, just one Z3000's triangle wave into the FM input of the other Z3000.
First you hear the Z3000 saw by itself. I have the other Z3000 into the Linear FM input, but the Linear FM control is set to nothing. A few bars, then I turn up the Linear FM control just a bit, then turn it down, then a bit more, then turn it down, then a bit more, then down....you get the idea
Then in unplug the external VCO and plug it into the Exponential FM input. Then I mess around with the tuning of the external VCO.
Then I unplug it and you have the dry saw again.
Now this is just a quick n' dirty because I know people are talking about it on other forums. I only had a few mins for this, I'm supposed to be working and gotta get back at it"
